Labour and delivery (case room)
The labour and delivery unit, also known as the case room, provides care for individuals who are over 20 weeks pregnant.
What we do
In St. John’s, the labour and delivery unit or case room, is located at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre.
Antenatal (before birth) and postpartum (after birth) services are available in the antenatal/postpartum unit, which is located on 5 North B at the Health Sciences Centre (attached to the Janeway).
The Janeway’s birthing unit is one of only a few in Canada attached to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This arrangement ensures the very best care for premature infants and those needing specialized medical treatment.
When to come to the hospital:
- Pregnancy greater than 20 weeks: Individuals with pregnancies greater than 20 weeks should proceed to their labour and delivery unit for pregnancy-related issues. No appointment is required. Non pregnancy-related health concerns would still go to a physician or emergency room as needed.
- Pregnancy less than 20 weeks: Individuals whose pregnancies are less than 20 weeks should proceed to their local emergency department. Consultation with obstetrics physicians will be made as required.
