Nephrology

The Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre has a nephrology program that offers specialty services to children and youth with concerns affecting their kidney function.

What we do

We diagnosis and manage medical concerns involving the kidney, such as:

  • Acute and chronic kidney disease
  • Hematuria
  • Proteinuria
  • Renal stones
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Nephritis
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Solitary/ectopic kidneys
  • HS Purpura
  • Reflux
  • High blood pressure
  • Fluid retention
  • Electrolyte and mineral imbalances.

Follow-up, support and education of the different diagnoses is offered through regular outpatient clinics.

Who we see

We provide care for children and youth up to their 18th birthday. We also assist them to transition to referred adult services.

Our team is comprised of the following health-care professionals:

  • Visiting nephrologists from IWK Children’s Hospital in Halifax, NS
  • Adult nephrologists
  • Nurse coordinators
  • Dietitians
  • Medical daycare staff
  • Social workers
  • Administrative assistants

Pharmacy, laboratory and X-ray technicians, nurses and staff of the operating room, recovery room, surgical daycare and inpatient units are also a part of our team as needed.

A referral is required from a health-care provider, such as your family doctor, emergency physician, or a nurse practitioner. See referrals.

Hours of operation

Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Clinics are also offered: six times per year at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John’s, and four times per year at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook.

Adult nephrologists are also available for urgent consultations.
